MATERNITY STUDIO SESSION GUIDE
HOW TO PREPARE AND WHAT TO EXPECT
So your session can run as smoothly as possible, I have compiled a prep guide to help us get the most out of your session!
Whilst I appreciate that most legal restrictions surrounding Covid-19 have now been lifted, I would really appreciate my Client’s continued support in following my guidelines during their appointments with me, in order to protect all of my customers (including newborn babies and vulnerable adults) as much as possible.
I will continue to wear a face mask throughout indoor appointments and will thoroughly wash my hands before and after sessions and use hand sanitiser when necessary. Whilst I understand that face coverings are no longer a legal requirement, I would appreciate if Client’s continue to wear a face covering or mask during indoor appointments with me (whilst not being photographed). I regularly have contact with newborn babies and vulnerable adults who have not yet been vaccinated (for example those who are pregnant or whom have recently given birth) and therefore I ask Clients to continue to wear face coverings for the time being, to help me keep all Client’s safe as far as possible during their appointments with me.
You can find out more information on the Covid-19 procedures I have put in place here.
The day before your session you will be asked to complete a Covid-19 declaration form which asks you to confirm that you and your household currently do not have symptoms and have not had symptoms of Covid-19 in the past 10 days and that you accept any possible risks of attending your session. I also affirm the same upon your completion of this document.
Booking your session
You can book in for a Maternity Session at any time after your 12 week scan. Maternity Sessions are suitable for women who are between their 28th and 36th weeks of pregnancy, so please contact me to book your session as soon as possible to ensure I have availability, as I do get booked up in advance.
How long does a Maternity Photography Session last?
The Full Experience Maternity session lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours, whilst the Mini Maternity Session lasts around 45 minutes.
What should I bring to the session?
Please bring the following items with you to your session;
- A strapless bra (preferably nude colour)
- A nude colour thong
- Black underwear (bra and pants)
The items of clothing above help to create beautiful images without the distraction of visible underwear. I have a bathroom within the studio, which can be used as a dressing room.
You may also want to bring a drink and some snacks, just in case you need an energy boost!
Can I have my hair & make-up done?
Yes! Our studio is located above a hair & beauty salon, so lots of our customers choose to add this onto their sessions with us.
Hair styling from £20
Make-up from £35
Please let us know upon booking if you would like us to arrange this.
How should I prepare and what should I wear?
Please arrive at the studio ready to start your session, including being hair & make up ready (if desired). Styling your hair in waves or curls works beautifully for Maternity Sessions, so I highly recommend this if you like this style!
I have a range of maternity dresses and fabrics at the studio that I use to create my signature style of images and we will have a look through some of these options at the start of your session.
You are welcome to bring along a couple of your clothing options too. I suggest that long flowing gowns, bodycon dresses or an oversized white shirt work best. Accessories such as big necklaces or earrings and hats can look great too – feel free to add a bit of your personality!
If your partner and/or other children are joining you for the Full Experience Session, I suggest they wear plain, well fitting clothing that they are comfortable in. Please avoid patterns, logos and prints and instead opt for two or three colour tones that compliment each other.
For example, your partner may wish to bring a pair of jeans, a pair of chino’s or smarter trousers and a couple of shirts/tops that are plain (not patterned); I recommend one being a lighter colour and one a darker colour.
Although you might not generally like dressing ‘matchy-matchy’ as a family/couple, for photo shoots, this actually looks great!
Below, I’ve put together a PDF to download, for some colour ideas and options for you to consider. These are only guidelines, but from experience I would suggest for family/partner images that you choose from the cool, neutral tones palette or the warm, earthy tones palette.
Download the PDF colour guide here; Studio Sessions What To Wear.

Can I have photos taken with my partner and other children?
Yes, our Full Experience Maternity Package incudes photographs with your partner and/or other children, so if you’d like to include them, please ensure you select this package! The Mini Maternity Package does not include photos with your partner and/or other children.
For sibling and family photographs, I take these at the end of the session and ask that wherever possible you arrange for your partner, a family member or friend to drop sibling/s off for the last 45 minutes of the session. This is to allow me to focus on capturing the best photographs of you during the first portion of your session. Unfortunately I am unable to allow siblings to stay in the studio throughout the session at present.
How should I prepare the kids?
If you have opted for the Full Experience package and would like to include your partner and/or other children, please ensure that all children arrive to the session fresh from a nap (if applicable) and well fed. Children should arrive in clean clothes, or with a change of clean clothes if you intend to change them on arrival. Please ensure that any chipped nail varnish and/or temporary tattoos have been removed prior to the session (including adults!).
My advice would be to say very little to your children about your planned session! By all means, mention you are going for a photo shoot and that it’s going to be fun, but please don’t worry about telling kids that they must listen and smile, as it’s often counter-productive. The best possible thing you can do is to ensure that young children have had a good nap before their session and that all kids have something to eat beforehand.
How will I pose?
Whilst some may feel confident in front of the camera, other’s (most!) are happy to be guided by me.
I won’t expect you to ‘know’ how to pose! I will help to position your hands in the correct places, rearrange your clothing as appropriate and tell you where to look – unless you’re a natural of course!
The specific types of poses really depend on you and what you’re after. I aim for a varied gallery and poses will reflect this.
Will I have to take my clothes off?…eeek!
It’s totally up to you! When you’re pregnant it’s a beautiful time to capture timeless images of you and your bump and this often works best without the distraction of loose clothing. We want to capture your beautiful shape in an elegant way.
This is why I will make recommendations on the clothing & fabrics we use, so you can get the best images from your time with me. But if you feel more comfortable being mostly covered, then that’s fine too!
Can I bring my extended family or friends to the session?
Only those participating in the session should attend the appointment, as having other’s there causes unnecessary distractions for everyone being photographed, particularly children. In addition, we ask that a maximum of 2 households or 6 people are present in the studio for our sessions.
When will I see my photographs?
The Full Experience: At the end of your session we will arrange your viewing & ordering appointment to take place in approximately 2-3 weeks time and this is when you will get to see your beautifully edited photographs, choose your mounted prints and any wall art or products you would like to order. Payment for an order is due at your viewing appointment. I always advise that all decision makers are present at the viewing appointment, as you may find you need help choosing your portraits! Viewing appointments are currently taking place in my studio as usual, at 1m+ social distancing with the use of face coverings in addition.
The Mini Session: After your session the Photographer will select and edit the best 5 images from your session and will deliver your digital images to you via a download link in an email within 2 weeks. The Photographer will ask you at the end of your session whether you would like to add any extra digital images, prints or wall art to your collection.
When will I get my order?
Once you have placed your order, you can expect your purchased images and prints to be ready for collection in approximately 3 weeks time. If you have ordered wall art or albums then these will be ready in around 4-6 weeks time
